11th International Particle Physics Masterclasses 2015

Mandoulides Schools organized advanced physics courses masterclasses for students and teachers, in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Dimitrios Sampsonidis, Assistant Professor of High Energy Physics at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and collaborator of CERN, was the keynote speaker, who explained and analyzed the fields and methods of basic research on elementary particles and the forces between them; the experiments conducted at CERN; the discovery of the Higgs boson particle, and applications arising from research.

In the laboratory part of the course, students used experimental data from the LHC accelerator at CERN, under the guidance of Mr. Demetris Eliades, to look between the orbits of particles and to "re-discover" particle Z, gauge boson weak interactions, and the Higgs particle, discovered in 2012 at CERN.

The Advanced Particle Physics masterclasses provide an opportunity for high school students to learn about particle physics. These are held in over 130 cities in 37 countries and with participation exceeding 10,000 students. They are organized by the Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) in collaboration with the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, IPPOG. The Universities of Athens, Thessaloniki and Crete, NCSR "Democritus" and the National Technical University of Athens in Greece also participated.
