Wheelchair and metal partition donation to Papanikolaou Hospital

A group of Mandoulides School students visited George Papanikolaou General Hospital on Tuesday, 15 October. The aim of the visit was the donation of a wheelchair to the Artificial Kidney Department and of a metal partition to the Blood Collection Department.

The students, who are parts of the Elementary School Environment Club, the Junior-Senior High School Volunteering Club and the Junior-Senior High School Environmental Club, thus witnessed the completion of a cycle that began with the collection of plastic caps. More specifically, in the past two years, a total of 1,300 kg of caps have been collected in the special containers available on the school premises. They were then sold to DION, the company that was in charge of buying the wheelchair and the metal partition with the money from the sale of the caps.

The students of the Schools were welcomed by Mrs. A. Hasiotou, Chief Nurse and Sleep Technologist at the Sleep Lab, who is also in charge of the environmental actions of the Hospital. She was the person who collaborated with the teachers of the Schools and those in charge of the above groups for the donation of the wheelchair and the partition. Afterwards, the students met with Director of the Nephrology Department - Artificial Kidney Unit, Mr. G. Bamichas, and Deputy Chief, Mr. M. Kalomiri, who thanked the children and informed them about the operation and the needs of their Unit. Finally, they toured around specific areas of the Hospital and learned about its history.

The students left “Georgios Papanikolaou” with a sense of satisfaction as they saw their hard work pay off with their donation which will relieve people with health problems. At the same time, they became even more aware of the needs of our fellow people and the value of taking care of the environment.

The plastic caps collection at our school was kindly provided by Rainbow Water and will, of course, continue throughout the current school year.
