Recently, E. Mandoulides Schools joined the European Educational Program SHORE<\/a>. The program\u2019s activities began on Friday, March 28 with an educational seminar held at the Theater of the Cultural and Sports Center of the School by the Environmental Organization\u00a0iSea<\/a> and the company\u00a0Intergeo<\/a>, focusing on aquatic waste.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The next activity was a coastal cleanup. On Wednesday, April 30, the 10th grade students and students from the Studies Abroad program (10th and 11th grade) took part in a coastal cleanup at Aretsou Beach (Kalamaria) with the support and guidance of educators from the Environmental Organization iSea.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The students were first briefed on-site by the instructors about the common types of waste found on beaches, whether carelessly left behind by beachgoers or washed ashore by the sea. They were also informed about the impact of such waste on the quality of life and health of marine organisms and humans. At last, students learned the basic waste legislation and the various methods of waste processing (biological treatment, recycling etc.).<\/p>\n

Next, students were provided with gloves and trash bags and proceeded with the coastal cleanup under the supervision and guidance of iSea instructors. At the end of the activity, the total waste collected was weighed and separated into conventional and recyclable materials. A total of 20,7 kilograms of conventional waste and 0,8 kilograms of recyclable waste was collected.<\/p>\n

Upon completion of the cleanup, the students returned to school, with greater environmental awareness, having witnessed the problem firsthand, and feeling satisfied, as their personal efforts contributed to cleaning a beach that serves as a popular spot for swimmers within the urban fabric of our city.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The SHORE program activities at Mandoulides Schools will continue with two more upcoming coastal cleanups, involving students from various grades and levels.<\/p>\n

About 150 students participated in the program.
