41 students from the 11th grade participated in the annual visit of the Schools to the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO – VIRGO) in Pisa, Italy, and to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The European Gravitational Observatory focuses on experimental and theoretical research on gravitational waves in Europe and promotes the dissemination of knowledge as well as the advanced training of young researchers.
CERN is one of the largest research centers in the world, with a massive global impact. Its research is centered on the fundamental physics of the structure of matter and the universe. CERN’s accelerators and detectors are among the largest and most complex scientific instruments in the world, used to study the fundamental building blocks of matter- elementary particles.
As part of the educational trip, students also visited the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Historical Museum- Einstein Museum in Bern, and the Opera Museum in Pisa. They also toured the sights of the cities of Bern, Lausanne, Geneva, Genoa, and Milan. The students were briefed about the educational trip by Mr. Nikolas Stergioulas, professor in the Department of Astrophysics, Astronomy, and Mechanics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
