On Thursday, February 26 and Friday, February 27, the EU Childocracy Greek Youth Democracy Summit “Democracy, Democratic Participation and Institutions” took place at Mandoulides Schools, organized by the European Public Law Organization (EPLO). Mandoulides Schools hosted schools and youth organizations from Italy and Bulgaria during the two-day Summit.
On the first day, distinguished guest speakers delivered presentations, including Mr. Konstantinos Tsoutsoplides (Head of the European Parliament Office in Greece), Ms. Anthi Kyriakopoulou (Expert on education, communication, policy development and equality assurance at Cedefop), Mr. Konstantinos Zervas (former Mayor of Thessaloniki and current President of the Committee for Circular Economy and Water Resources Management of Central Macedonia), Ms. Faye Selimi (Head of the Circular Economy and Climate Institute at EPLO), Ms. Olia Panagiotopoulou (Manager at Europe Direct) and Ms. Katerina Omouridou (Programs Officer at Europe Direct), as well as Ms. Maria Spyraki (journalist and former Member of the European Parliament).
The speakers informed the students about the importance of their participation in political decision-making processes, the role young people play in the European Union, and the values and benefits offered by the EU. We sincerely thank them for their prompt response to our invitation.
On the second day of the Summit, the participants themselves took the floor. Specifically, a video creation competition was held on the themes of the European Union, equality, political decision-making, and the significance of the EU for young people. The videos were evaluated by a jury, and the 2nd prize was awarded to Anthi Sklavou, a 10th-grade student at Mandoulides Schools, for her work.
Following this, students from each country presented one of the activities or campaigns they had implemented as part of the program and shared their experiences, highlighting how important their participation in this European initiative had been.
The Summit was attended by the participating students of the Childocracy program, the students of the Studies Abroad program from the 10th and 11th grades, as well as students from the 9th grade.
Warm thanks are due to the organizers, specifically EPLO and the coordinators Ms. L. Stavrou, Ms. E. Psalti and Ms. L. Lymperopoulou, as well as to the supervising teachers Ms. I. Nakou and Ms. F. Georgiou.
