International IT Contest BEBRAS CHALLENGE IN GREECE

All Mandoulides students of 7th, 8th and 9th Grade will participate in the international Bebras Challenge in Greece, which will take place from 18/11/2019 to 29/11/2019.

More specifically, the students practiced between 07/10/2019 and 14/11/2019 during the IT and Technology classes. There, they dealt with tasks of previous contests in order to comprehend the logic of the problems and got familiar with basic programming concepts such as logical conditions, repetition structure, trees, graphics, backtracking etc.

From 18/11/2019 to 29/11/19 during the IT and Technology courses, students will be provided with personal data to access the contest and be tested on this year’s tasks according to their grade.

Contest Description

Bebras Challenge is an international initiative aiming to promote Informatics (or Computer Science) and Computational Thinking among teachers and students of all ages. It is organized in schools using computers or mobile devices for various age groups and under the supervision of teachers.

Thousands of students from over 50 countries participate in the contest each year. For school year 2019 - 2020 the contest has been approved by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religions (Φ15 / 155347 / Δ2 / 4.10.2019).

Bebras Challenge is 35 minutes long and participants are asked to answer 10 short problems or multiple choice questions. The questions require the application of logical and computational thinking. The tasks are fun and engaging, and are based on important problems often encountered by IT scientists. They are expressed in such a way that no prior formal knowledge is required - just logical and computational thinking.

The topics are developed at the annual international Bebras workshop specifically for this purpose. Bebras tasks:

  • represent IT concepts,
  • should be solved in 3 minutes,
  • are solvable on a computer without use of other software or paper and pencil.

The tasks are divided into 3 categories: easy, medium and hard and there is also negative marking in case of incorrect answers.

Examples of tasks can be found here.
